As part of our Global Engagement Strategy, we want to highlight our Global Community right here within the Department. This month, we have learned so much from student service officer, Yun Tao, who shares with us how her upbringing has influenced her world view and her work here  in our Department. We can all be inspired by her work ethic, dedication, and global perspective.

What are your academic and/or research interests?

I am a Student Service Officer who strives to optimize the anesthesia clerkship experience for medical students. I enjoy creating a well-rounded and enriching educational experience for medical students and also find value in supporting faculty in their teaching efforts.

Where did you grow up?

P.R China

How do you think your upbringing influenced your world view? (culture, religion, geography, economics, other factors)?

Growing up in China and pursuing my master’s degree in the US has deeply impacted how I see the world. Although not religious, my Chinese upbringing taught me Confucian values that influenced me to treat people with respect, practice humility, and be socially responsible. The diverse landscapes in China showed me the contrasts between urban and rural life, highlighting the need for fair opportunities for all. Economically, my family’s experiences navigating changes in China’s economy taught me the value of education and hard work. Studying in the US broadened my perspective, introducing me to diverse cultures and the importance of individuality and innovation.

How is healthcare different in other countries where you have lived/visited/worked?

In China, traditional and modern medicine are combined, and access to care can differ between cities and rural areas. In the US, there is highly advanced care, but costs and insurance coverage can be overwhelming issues for many patients.

How do you think we can improve the care of our patients in the USA?

We need to address healthcare costs and ensure affordable access to medical services and treatments for all patients.

How does a global perspective strengthen the care of patients?

Having a global perspective in patient care means drawing from the best practices and knowledge from around the world.

What has been your most challenging or surprising lesson learned when engaging with other cultures?

Upon moving to the U.S., I was both intrigued and challenged by the American emphasis on individual pursuits, self-expression, and personal freedoms. Engaging with the American culture, while holding onto my Chinese roots, has taught me the importance of flexibility, open-mindedness, and the continual pursuit of understanding.

What has been the most amazing thing you have seen while traveling to another country?

Traveling to another country gave me an opportunity to encounter such moments, where nature, history, and human ingenuity converge in awe-inspiring ways.
